Tsitsikamma Tourism - Accommodation - Activities - Attractions
Tsitsikamma - the Garden of the Garden Route welcomes you - Tsitsikamma is a khoi word meaning “place of abundant or sparkling water”. The region, which sits on a 200m high plateau stretches from the Bloukrans River in the west to the Tsitsikamma River in the east, is bordered on the north by the imposing Tsitsikamma Mountains and in the south by the Indian Ocean.
The area is covered in large tracts of indigenous forest, commercial plantation and Fynbos. Deep river gorges cleft the plateau as they make their way down to the sea, creating spectacular waterfalls and deep kloofs (ravines). The water in the rivers is a characteristic dark brown (Coca Cola Water) due to its high tannin content leached from the surrounding vegetation.
A mild all year round climate (temperature variations only between 10 °C and 25 °C generally) allows one to make the most of all the outdoor activities that are on offer, whilst a high rainfall in excess of 1200mm per year ensures the lushness of vegetation that the area is renowned for.
The region is accessed directly from the N2 National Road that passes through the area on an east to west line. This section of road is one of only a few highways in the world to have 3 bridges in excess of 152 meters in height.
Traveling through the eastern Tsitsikamma, the R102 provincial road offers a scenic alternative to the N2 through the countryside, passing Witels Peak, Witelsbos Forestry Station, Oudebosch and Eerste Rivier.
On the western border, the Groot Rivier Pass leads off the N2 and meanders through the fynbos plateau before descending through enchanting indigenous forest down to Natures Valley, well-known for its lagoon and golden beach.
Beautiful indigenous forest, protected by the State, is home to ancient trees such as Yellowwood, Stinkwood, Hard Pear, Ironwood, Kamassi and many others.
Over time, rivers have cut awesome gorges through the coastal plateau as they flow down to the spectacular coastline.
With all these natural gifts and a mild climate throughout the year, it's natural that the Tsitsikamma should offer loads of adventure opportunities for everyone.
Adventure seekers will revel in the diverse range of activities. Storms River Village is the hub of adventure tours. Here you can choose from dozens of options that range from laid back and lazy to extreme and exciting. Explore the indigenous forests from high on a treetop canopy tour or take the more sedate route with a tractor and trailer ride on a woodcutter's journey. Take a guided walk or a challenging mountain bike ride in the forests or try your hand at bass and fly fishing.
For the true adrenaline junkie, the Bloukrans bridge offers the highest commercial bungy jump from a bridge in the world (at more than 200 meter free fall) or you can marvel at the engineering brilliance of bridge itself and the sheer beauty on a guided bridge walking tour. The bridge over the 216m deep Bloukrans Gorge is the highest bridge in Africa. Here you will also find the Tsitsikamma Khoisan Cultural Village.
If only passing through on the N2 make sure you take a moment to stop at the bridge over Storms River for magnificent views up and down the gorge. Even better, head for the Storms River Mouth entrance to the Tsitsikamma National Park, where a number of short walking trails, one with a wonderfully wobbly suspension bridge, give you superb experiences of forest and coast. Or, if you choose to just relax it is easy to unwind for a day or two in the supremely tranquil and pristine wonderland of forest, mountain and sea.
