Tsitsikamma - the Garden of the Garden Route welcomes you - Tsitsikamma is a khoi word meaning “place of abundant or sparkling water”. The region, which sits on a 200m high plateau stretches from the Bloukrans River in the west to the Tsitsikamma River in the east, is bordered on the north by the imposing Tsitsikamma Mountains and in the south by the Indian Ocean. 

The area is covered in large tracts of indigenous forest, commercial plantation and Fynbos. Deep river gorges cleft the plateau as they make their way down to the sea, creating spectacular waterfalls and deep kloofs (ravines). The water in the rivers is a characteristic dark brown (Coca Cola Water) due to its high tannin content leached from the surrounding vegetation. 

A mild all year round climate (temperature variations only between 10 °C and 25 °C generally) allows one to make the most of all the outdoor activities that are on offer, whilst a high rainfall in excess of 1200mm per year ensures the lushness of vegetation that the area is renowned for. 

The region is accessed directly from the N2 National Road that passes through the area on an east to west line. This section of road is one of only a few highways in the world to have 3 bridges in excess of 152 meters in height. 

Traveling through the eastern Tsitsikamma, the R102 provincial road offers a scenic alternative to the N2 through the countryside, passing Witels Peak, Witelsbos Forestry Station, Oudebosch and Eerste Rivier. 

On the western border, the Groot Rivier Pass leads off the N2 and meanders through the fynbos plateau before descending through enchanting indigenous forest down to Natures Valley, well-known for its lagoon and golden beach.

  • Cadeau Adventure Trails
    Cadeau Hiking Trails along the Garden Route offer two one-day trails - The Bloubaai coastal hiking trail and the Elands River Coastal hiking trail. These two new hiking trails are partly in the Tsitsikamma National Park, one of South Africa's best nature conservation areas, and partly on private land. the location of the two trails promises hikers only the best hiking experience - two trails with very different experiences and challenges. Minimum of 4 hikers will be allowed and booking in advance of 3 days IS ESSENCIAL

    This is a 2 - 6 day hiking trail through the scenic Tsitsikamma Mountains. The trail meanders through mountain fynbos and indigenous forests with wonderful river gorge and mountain scenery. There are plenty of rivers, streams and rock pools for swimming.

  • Tsitsikamma Woodcutters Journey
    Journey with us down the old Storms River Pass and experience the indigenous forest from the comfort of a specially designed vehicle. Follow the elephant trail, passing yellowwoods and stinkwoods while hearing about the history of the area and the indigenous flora and fauna.

  • Garden Route National Park
    Along the South Coast of South Africa lies one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world, home to the Garden Route National Park. A mosaic of ecosystems, it encompasses the world renowned Tsitsikamma and Southern Cape indigenous forest and associated Fynbos areas.
  • The Big Tree And Ratel Hiking Trails - Storms River Village
    The well sign-posted “Big Tree” is situated on the N2, just east of the entrance to Storms River Village. A 500m wooden boardwalk through indigenous forest leads to the Yellowwood giant. Walking to the tree takes about 10 minutes. The tree is estimated to be ±800 years old; it stands 36.6 meters high and has a circumference of almost 9 meters. It is accessible by vehicle for those with lack of mobility, by special permission. The Ratel Nature Walk follows on from the Big Tree. This trail offers either a 2.6km or 4.2km walk through wet and medium moist High forest, both options are relatively easy.
